Don’t Give Into The Menopausal Monster & Hot Flashes


When my mother first entered menopause, I saw a sweet, easy-going woman transform into an often irritated, emotionally fatigued woman. My father too noticed the change. She was rancorous toward him. She refused to make love. And he noticed an often unstable mood. But according to my mother, the hot flashes were the worst aspect of the condition. 
 
Random surges of heat engulfed her body. She would sit and watch television, only to become engulfed in sweat. During her work presentations, sweat would drip down her face. Even while driving, she noticed her body become peppered with droplets of sweat. 
 
For women like my mother, sweating and redness of the face were common. And while hot flashes made for the most severe of her menopause symptoms, other women suffered from other debilitating problems, such as violent mood swings and very low sex drive.  
 
Hot Flashes—the Cause
When my mother went through menopause, the doctors told her that her body would experience a change in the production of progesterone and estrogen. The lowered estrogen levels would prevent the hormone form metabolizing testosterone, leading to low sex drive. The high progesterone and low estrogen levels would cause hot flashes. 
 
Meanwhile, the blood vessels start to dilate and constrict causing the body temperature to rise. So each time my mom would be at a presentation or on the sofa watching television, her blood vessels were constricting and causing a surge of sweat to engulf her body.
